Monitoring the anaesthetised patient: do we really need all these fancy monitors?

Anaesthesia produces a very altered physiological state. Unfortunately there are no perfect drugs, any drug that we may choose to administer for analgesia, sedation and anaesthesia may and often do produce unwanted side effects. These physiological derangements can result in serious harm, even death in certain circumstances. An ability to appropriately monitor the physiological status of the sedated and anaesthetised patient allows us to respond in a timely and appropriate fashion to significant problems, resulting in a much greater chance of a positive outcome for the patient. The benefits and limitations of all aspects of patient monitoring will be evaluated including both clinical parameters and mechanical devices.
