Behaviour modification for aggressive cats

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

The way an animal behaves at any given time depends on three key factors; its genetic predisposition, what is has learnt from previous experiences as well as the current environment. Therefore when treating a cat with anxiety, the underlying reason for most aggression exhibited by cats, the 3 M approach to address the three underlying factors for behaviour is needed. The 3 Ms are; behaviour modification, environmental management and medication. Behaviour modification involves changing the underlying emotional state of the cat from fear or anxiety to a more neutral, or preferably a more positive, one. This then leads to an increase in the cat’s ability to cope with the fear provoking stimuli and decrease the aggressive response. There are several steps involved in the process, including avoiding the fear provoking stimulus, teaching calm on cue and removal of all punishment. The client needs to understand why these steps are necessary and shown how to implement each of them to achieve a successful outcome for cat and owner.
