A new understanding of Salmonella ecology in livestock populations

Salmonella is an important zoonotic pathogen and despite much effort, the human incidence of salmonellosis in many parts of the world is stubbornly persistent. Traditionally, Salmonella is thought of a pathogen of warm-blooded animals and transmits between animals by feco-oral spread. However, recent observations in some cattle populations challenge this viewpoint and call for a new understanding of the ecology and evolution of Salmonella. More specifically, we proposal an additional transdermal route of infection mediated by various other organisms (e.g., arthropods and others). In this presentation, we will share a proposed new framework of Salmonella in cattle populations which might point to novel areas of control.
