Comparative behaviour modification techniques for treatment of aggression

Controversy exists in training and behaviour modification fields regarding the ‘best’ techniques to reduce or manage aggression in dogs. Some people will suggest that we need to be the leader of the pack, or assert our dominance. Others lean more towards rewarding appropriate behaviour and using programs designed to reduce anxiety. In both camps there are various behaviour modification strategies employed. The aim of this session is to explore various techniques that have been proposed and used to reduce aggression in dog and cats. In considering the pros and cons of different behaviour modification strategies we will take an evidence based approach, starting with clarifying the various types of motivations that lead to aggression. That is, establishing a diagnosis and understanding of pathophysiology and pathopsychology that can underlie aggression. With this knowledge we can explore the benefits, pit-falls, dangers and targeted nature of different behaviour modification protocols. This discussion will inform the clinician’s choice of behaviour modification techniques to employ in constructing treatment plans designed to reduce aggression in cats and dogs. Additionally, clinicians will appreciate where and how things can go wrong, and how to prevent and remedy these problems.
